Keith Gill, also known on YouTube as “Roaring Kitty,” faces a critical moment with his GameStop options as the stock’s volatile price movements put his investments at risk.
On Tuesday, GameStop’s stock dropped by as much as 8% before rebounding to close the session up 23% at USD 30.49. This dramatic shift briefly pushed Gill’s significant holdings into the red, highlighting the precarious nature of his investment just ahead of the options’ expiration date on June 21.
Keith Gill, who became a central figure in the meme-stock phenomenon of 2021, has a large position in GameStop’s June 21 call options, with a strike price of USD 20. Initially purchased for USD 5.6754 per contract, these options represented an investment of USD 68.1 million.
Despite a high point on Friday where the contracts’ value surged to USD 340.9 million, they fell to as low as USD 5.05 on Tuesday, underscoring the volatile nature of such investments. By the end of trading on Tuesday, the contracts were valued at USD 11.25 each, totaling about USD 135 million.
Market Dynamics and GameStop’s Impact
“The guy is in a race against time decay,” commented Henry Schwartz, global head of client engagement at Cboe Global Markets, highlighting the urgency for Gill to manage his investments effectively as the expiration date approaches. This scenario could force Gill to exercise his options and acquire the stock directly, requiring him to commit a substantial USD 240 million to take delivery of 12 million GameStop shares.
Market dynamics could further complicate Gill’s situation. Market makers, who facilitate options trading and typically seek to remain neutral, may adjust their positions if GameStop’s stock continues to fall. This adjustment could lead to further selling pressure on the stock if it dips below the strike price of Gill’s options.
As the expiration date nears, the financial community watches closely, with Schwartz noting, “I think everybody’s watching those contracts like a hawk,” indicating widespread interest in how this high-stakes investment plays out.
